What is Awakening the Machine? – WoW The War Within

Awakening the Machine is a new event in The War Within expansion. It is located at Gundargaz in The Ringing Deeps in Khaz Algar /way 47.50, 32.04.

To unlock The Awakening the Machine event you need to be on a level 80 character, and be Renown 3 with Assembly of the Deeps, which is the faction located within The Ringing Deeps.
Find Speaker Kuldas in Gundargaz and talk to him. Select “Let’s go do some maintenance!”, select “Begin Maintenance”, and you’ll be teleported to the instance.
You can enter the event multiple times per week, but only complete it once.

You can complete the event once per week per character, and is only soloable. No groups.
It is quite easy for most level 80s, so if you feel a little undergeared try it out anyways.

Awakening the Machine – Mobs & Mechanics

When you’ve entered the Awakened Machine, you’ll see Speaker Kuldas in the middle of the room. Your objective is to defend him, while he repairs the machine. When ready to begin, speak to him and select “I’m ready to continue”. After every 5th wave you’ll be able to take a small break, change talents, eat and heal. Start the next 5 waves by again speaking to Speaker Kuldas and select “I’m ready to continue”.

You will win the event by completing all 20 waves. You can fail the event and get kicked out if Speaker Kuldas dies. You can also leave the event early every 5th wave by speaking to Speaker Kuldas and selecting “I’d like to leave.”. It will come up and ask if you’re sure you want to leave. Leaving the instance resets your progress, and you’ll have to start from wave 0 if you enter it again.

Spare Toolbox

This is a consumable, which can drop from multiple enemies around Khaz Algar. Seemingly you can only hold one of these at a time, and wont drop if you have one on you. It can be used inside the Awakening the Machine event, and will be consumed/disappear upon use. When used you’ll have 90 seconds to choose between 3 different buffs, which will be permanent throughout the current scenario. These are all the possible buffs which you can select between:

Always use the Spare Toolbox, when you’ve just entered the instance.
The best buff is Edict of Rage for all classes.

Wave 1-5

You’ll encounter 3 different mobs in the first 5 waves: Swarmbots, Corrupted Machinists, and an Explosive Bomberbot.

The Swarmbots have a small health pool, and will go directly to Speaker Kuldas. They don’t do very much damage. Any damage, which you deal, will immediately draw the aggro to you. Simply damage them down to 0 hp.

The Corrupted Machinists are dwarfs, who cast an interruptible cast directed at Speaker Kuldas: Purging Flames. They will instantly die if you interrupt them, and as there will be some waves with two of them I recommend having two interrupts. This is however not needed as they can also easily be damaged down.

On wave 5 there will also spawns a single Explosive Bomberbot. This mob wanders around the room aimlessly. If you get too close to it, it will cast Self Destruct. This will make the bot blow up after a few seconds dealing damage to everything within its range, both you, Speaker Kuldas and other enemies. You can very easily run away after triggering the self-destruct, so simply run close to it, make sure it’s not close to Speaker Kuldas, and it will blow itself up and die.

Wave 5-10

In the following 5 waves (wave 5-10) you’ll encounter 2 mobs you’ve already fought; Swarmbots, Corrupted Machinists, and 2 new mobs: Malfunctioning Pylon, and an Automatic Ironstrider.

The Malfunctioning Pylon is a stationary mob which will cast an uninterruptible spell. You need to put something, either you or a mob, between it and Speaker Kuldas. This does do more damage than any of the other mobs, so make sure it doesn’t kill you. The only way to get rid of it is to damage it down to 0 hp.

The Automatic Ironstrider is a mob, which will run directly at you. It will melee you, and occasionally cast Volatile Magma. This spell will put a debuff on you, which will go off after a few seconds, sending out 4 lava blobs. You can see these blobs and what way they’re gonna go, so make sure you don’t hit Speaker Kuldas with it. It will also put a ground effect underneath you, when it runs out. This will damage you, if you stand in it. It will also damage Speaker Kuldas, if you place the ground effect underneath him. Damage him down to 0 hp.

The Automatic Ironstrider has the same appearance of the mount you can receive from the rewards chests.

Wave 10-15

In the following 5 waves (wave 10-15) you’ll encounter 3 mobs you’ve already fought; Corrupted Machinists, Automatic Ironstrider, and Explosive Bomberbots. You’ll also encounter 2 new mobs: Medbots, and Nullbots.

These two new mobs don’t have too much hp, and do not do damage. The Medbot will go around and try to repair other damaged bots. They do this by channelling Routine Maintenance, which will pulse a healing wave within a small area of the bot. When killed they will drop healing potions on the ground, which will heal Speaker Kuldas when you run over them. If not picked up the potions will lie on the floor for a while before despawning, making you able to save them for the following wave.

The Nullbot (furthest right in the picture above) makes one other enemy in the room immune to damage. When it casts Nullification Barrier, it will make an electrical line between it and its target. Simply kill this enemy first, before trying to kill its target.

Wave 15-20

The final 5 waves will throw every mob you’ve encountered in the prior waves at you again. The very final wave is just one Awakened Phalanx, which is the event’s boss.

This boss isn’t very harmful, only doing melee to you and having two casts. One cast (Bellowing Slam) is a channel, which will make multiple rocks fall from the ceiling, landing randomly around the room. Dodging these should be no problem, but they can land on Speaker Kuldas. They don’t post a significant threat to his overall health. The second spell is a charge, which takes a while for him to cast. Make sure he charges away from Speaker Kuldas. You can move out the way as there is a small time frame between it having locked onto you, and him starting charging.

When the boss is killed you’ll immediately be teleported back to Gundargaz, where you can claim your rewards.

Awakening the Machine Rewards

Chest rewards

For each 5th wave completed you’ll unlock a rewards chests after leaving, dying or finishing the instances. Totalling at 4 chests max per week per character. Each chests have different rewards.
Completing the 5 waves will award you the smallest chest (center left) containing 15 Valorstones, 150 rep towards The Assembly of the Deeps, 2 Carved Harbinger Crests, and 100 Resonance Crystal.

Completing the 10 waves will award you the smaller medium chest (far right) containing 18 Valorstones, 250 rep towards The Assembly of the Deeps, and 1 Fractured Spark of Omens, however only if you haven’t received the current max of those sparks.

Completing the 15 waves will award you the bigger medium chest (far left) containing 20 Valorstones, 350 rep towards The Assembly of the Deeps, 3 Carved Harbinger Crests, and 150 Resonance Crystal.

Completing all 20 waves will award you the biggest chest (center) containing 22 Valorstones, 350 rep towards The Assembly of the Deeps, and 3 Carved Harbinger Crests.

Awarding a total of 75 Valorstones, 1100 Rep, 250 Resonance Crystals, 8 Carved Harbinger Crests and potentially one Fractured Spawk of Omens, if all 20 waves have been completed consecutively.

As of writing this article it seems the chests don’t always award the same rewards, with it sometimes being less than stated above or more.

Bonus rewards & Quests

Besides the normal rewards you will receive from the chests, they also have the chance to drop transmogs, and a mount!
The chests will each have a chance to drop Machine Defense Unit 1-11 mount, which is the appearance of the Automatic Ironstrider. It has a fairly high drop chance, with people speculating it to be around 20%.

You will also be able to pick up two weekly quests requiring you to complete the awakening the machine event. The “Gearing Up for Trouble” quests can be picked up from Gnawbles in Gundargaz at /way 47.6 35.2.

This requires you to complete 20 waves of the Awakening the Machine event. This can be any 20 waves, so you do not have to complete all 20 waves in a row. Handing this quest in, you’ll be awarded with Awakened Mechanical Cache, which will award you with a pretty good item level gear piece OR a Restored Coffer Key (see the Delves guide here). It can also award you with a recipe, but those do have a pretty low drop chance.

The second weekly quest you can pick up is “The Call of the Worldsoul”. You’ll need to be level 80, and have done the campaign to pick this quest up from Faerin Lother. You’ll find her in Dorngal in Isle of Dorn at /way 46.07, 49.62.

Here you have to choose between up to 4 objectives, one of which is completing the Awakening the Machine event. This quest will always award you with a Pinnacle Cache, so if you’re planning on doing the Awakening the Machine event, you might as well choose that objective. It does seem that all objectives are not always available, so you might not be able to choose Awakening the Machine.
